World Teams: Netherlands, U.S. In Trouble

With one round to go in the pool stage, the Netherlands and the United States are in danger of missing out on the next rounds of the World Team Chess Championship. Both teams are currently not among the top four in their respective groups. China and Uzbekistan are the current leaders in their groups and are already certain to reach the knockout stages.

Our first report stated that the US did not send its strongest possible team to Israel, but this is true of more countries. Without any of their top eight ranked players, China is still doing quite well, with two 3-1 wins and two 3.5-0.5 wins so far. In the third round, they defeated the strong team of Ukraine with two draws and two wins in the lower boards.

GM Bai Jinshi defeated GM Andrei Volokitin on board three after the latter dominated the game, continued to press, completely spoiled the winning position, and then repressed:

The same round saw an incredible blunder in the game between Spain’s GM David Anton and GM Jules Moussard in a 2-2 draw. France could have won the match as a whole ball hung for a move missed by players and commentators alike:

Playing without GM Viswanathan Anand, who is one of the commentators in Jerusalem, India achieved an important win against Azerbaijan, with GM Vidit Gujrati’s win against GM Shahriyar Mamedyarov deciding the match. It was a game that could have easily seen the reverse:

In the fourth round, China also beat the Netherlands 3.5-0.5 to secure victory in the reserve round pool, while the Dutch team is effectively eliminated as they play against the strong Ukrainians, while Spain, the only team that theoretically could catch, faces South Africa.

In Group B, nothing is decided yet, while Olympic gold winners Uzbekistan look good again. Our Game of the Day is the above table from the Poland-Azerbaijan match, which ended 2-2:

The USA is in last place in Group B after a 2.5-1.5 loss at home. Cuban-born GM Yuniesky Quesada was a pawn against GM Evgeny Postny, but since all the pawns were on one side of the board, it was always a draw.
