oh boy I bet this list could be 100 items Fri if we had time…
I’m talking about what ordinary people think has been ruined by the invention of the Internet. And the folks over at AskReddit were nice enough to tell us what they thought of it.
Let’s see.
“Private
This is the scary part.
It’s not just the algorithms that profile kids, but teenagers listing their lives on social networks like Twitter. We believe in political positions on every subject, and sometimes have hurtful initiatives.”
“Secret Things.
Before the internet, you should really learn about certain things in the world. A beautiful campsite that few people know about. Some Secret Rules at Disneyland etc.
When people post it, things change and nothing special happens.”
“Parties listen. I was a teenager in the late 1970s
Budhis and I bring 3 albums together on Sunday afternoons. Then we’ll listen to music until dark and listen to things that aren’t in our collection. It was at these hearings that I first heard much of what people today call classics.
I am a big fan of Yes and ELP. David is Rush; Played with Pink Floyd and Jethro Tull. Joey is Black Sabbath. I got to Van Halen and the Doors. Joey’s brother is Camal; I don’t remember anything other than being very cool with Can.
I don’t think there’s ever been a name like that. We all came out listening to each other’s favorite songs. It was so much fun and I miss it. Something like this is unimaginable in the age of the internet, but something has been lost.
This afternoon I dove into the old vinyl and listened to some Alan Parsons and Jimi Hendrix. Just the thing for a rainy Sunday afternoon.”
“Conspiracy Theories.
It used to be something amazing to listen to. You may have a random or rare encounter with an actual conspiracy theorist or see one in a movie.
It’s sad that now everyone has an aunt or an uncle or a friend.”
“Magazines.
I like to mail magazines.
I can’t wait for Time and Newsweek to arrive on Monday.”
“Pawn Shops/Shops.
I used to be able to find a few shops that specialized in something.
Now they take the stuff and put it on ebay and the price is the same.”
“Attention Section.
This. I feel like I’m not thinking about things anymore. We have to look at that.
I never thought the endless stream of information would be my downfall. We are here.”
“I used to have a pen.
Then we both got internet and the novelty wore off.
“Trivia nights in pubs.
It’s people who cheat at night in pubs.”
“Romantic Relationships.
People on social media spread venom and go crazy over every little thing.”
“There will be more tourists to beautiful and clean places.
An influencer isn’t going to get there after someone’s post goes viral.”
