Vermont man dies after fight breaks out at middle school basketball game

Police responded to the Alburgh Community Education Center on Champlain Street at 6:56 p.m. for a report of a large fight involving several bystanders. This happened during a seventh and eighth grade basketball game between Alburgh and St. Albans. Police said a man, Russel Giroux, 60, of Alburgh, who was involved in the fight, required medical attention. Detectives learned that Mr. Giroux had left school and was driving home when he stopped his car and called first responders. Giroux was taken to Northwestern Medical Center in St. Albans. He later died in hospital. Police have not released how Giroux was injured in the incident. The Grand Isle Supervisory Union issued a statement about the incident Wednesday afternoon. Giroux’s body was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Burlington for an autopsy to determine the cause of death. The cause and manner of death are pending further investigation, including toxicology testing and ongoing work by Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation detectives assigned to the case. This is an active and ongoing investigation. VSP asks if anyone was involved in the fight, or anyone with information, to call them at the Saint Albans barracks at 802-524-5993.
