DALLAS (SMU) – An interdisciplinary team, including SMU’s Mathematics Chair Daniel Reynolds and SMU PhD graduate David Gardner, has been awarded the 2023 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering.
The award, presented by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Society for Computing Machinery (ACM), recognizes outstanding contributions to the development and use of mathematical and computational tools and methods to solve mathematical and scientific and engineering problems. It is one of SIAM’s most prestigious awards and will be presented to the team at the 2023 SIAM Computer Science and Engineering Conference in Amsterdam next February.
Reynolds, Reynolds, professor and chair of mathematics at SMU (Southern Methodist University), and Gardner, who received his doctorate in mathematics at SMU, are part of a team recognized for years of development of the open-source SUNDIALS software suite. , It is designed to provide a reliable tool for solving fundamental mathematical equations for modeling and simulating physical phenomena through easy integration into existing simulation codes. This volume covers systems of ordinary differential equations; systems of differential-algebraic equations and nonlinearities; Includes methods for solving algebraic systems.
Reynolds first joined the team as a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) from 2003 to 2005, but most of his contributions to the work have been during the past 10 years while teaching at SMU.
Gardner is now a computer scientist at the Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) at LLNL.
Also in SUNDIALS group:
- Carol Woodward; technical staff; Center for Applied Scientific Computing (CASC) (LLNL);
- Cody Balos computer scientist CASC LLNL
- Peter Brown, Computational physicist; CASC LLNL
- Alan Hindmarsh Mathematician CASC LLNL (Retired)
- Radu Serban Senior Scientist Department of Mechanical Engineering University of Wisconsin–Madison
“While many researchers in our discipline develop unique methods, our team has spent considerable effort to solidify these methods into robust and documented software tools,” said Reynolds, who has been at SMU for 14 years. “By recognizing the impact this software has had on the SIAM community, I feel like this award validates this extra effort.”
SMU (Southern Methodist University) is a nationally ranked global research university in Dallas. Alumni of SMU; More than 12,000 faculty members and students from eight degree-granting schools, their careers, They demonstrate an entrepreneurial spirit as they lead change in the community and the world.
