Selena Gomez is a longtime member of Taylor Swift’s circle of friends, but Gomez said Swift is her “only friend” in the entertainment industry.
Gomez talked about her life in the entertainment industry with Rolling Stone’s Alex Morris in an interview published Thursday. The singer’s new film, “Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me,” which chronicles her mental health journey since 2016, was also released Friday.
Gomez told Rolling Stone she struggled to find her voice and appeal to her fans growing up. The former Disney star also shared that she didn’t have many celebrity friends she could talk to about her problems.
“I’ve never been involved with a group of beautiful girls who were celebrities. My only friend in the industry is Taylor [Swift], so I remember feeling like I didn’t fit in. I felt the presence of everyone around me living life to the fullest. I had this opportunity, and I was very happy, but … what? Do these materialistic things make me happy?” he said and added, “I just didn’t like who I was, because I didn’t know who I was.”

Swift and Gomez met in 2005. Gomez told KIIS FM UK in 2017 that they were both dating members of The Jonas Brothers at the time and “just clicked.”
The friends have showered each other with praise in recent weeks. Gomez shared on her new SiriusXM Radio channel on Thursday that Swift is “the most influential artist to me,” according to Billboard.
“It’s not because he’s my friend, but he’s been an artist who can switch many different genres of music and he’s able to do it seamlessly and I really appreciate that. And that’s very rare,” he said. “I love his process and admire all the work he’s done. He’s definitely inspired me.”
Swift, who released her 10th studio album “Midnights” on October 21, also showed her support for Gomez and her new film. In an Instagram story posted on Friday, the singer shared the trailer for “Akili Yangu & Me” and a sweet note to the “Murder in the House” actress.
