Racing Louisville FC sends Emily Fox to North Carolina Courage in 3-player trade: Sources

Defender Emily Fox is headed to the North Carolina Courage as part of a trade with Racing Louisville FC in exchange for defenders Abby Erceg and Carson Pickett, according to sources who were not authorized to speak about the trade. The exchange is expected to be announced on Monday afternoon. Here’s what you need to know:

  • Fox, the first pick in the 2021 draft, Racing has been in Louisville since its debut as an expansion team. Although he primarily plays on the left, he can also move to the center or play on the right.
  • The Courage will add Fox to their backline in place of Carson Pickett. But the Courage is in the midst of a roster rebuild, and Erceg’s departure, along with the team’s recent trade with Angel City FC for right fielder Merritt Mathias, means a new defense for the Courage in 2023.

Racing Louisville’s offseason moves

Louisville announced several key contract extensions this offseason, most notably defensive midfielder Jaelin Howell and goalkeeper Katie Lund. They also acquired forward Paige Monaghan as part of a trade with Gotham FC.

During the NWSL draft, they mostly strengthened their offensive line by selecting Kayla Fisher (F, Ohio State). 16 overall, Brianna Martinez (D, Notre Dame) no. 17, Jadin Edwards (F, New Mexico) no. 29 and Riley Parker (F, Alabama) at no. 31 with their four picks.

Ercheg’s move to Louisville would help add some more veteran presence to the team, as well as reunite her (and Pickett) with former Courage teammate Jessica McDonald.

North Carolina is moving out of state

Kairat also has a busy off-season. After the team chose to explore Debinha in free agency (eventually going to Kansas City), it also traded its star rookie, Diana Ordoñez, to the Houston Dash for a draft pick. They acquired Tyler Lussi from Angel City in the Merritt Mathias trade last week.

North Carolina also locked up some key players, including midfielder Brianna Pinto, goalkeeper Casey Murphy and defender Ryan Williams to three-year deals. The club also signed 23-year-old forward Mille Gail Jensen, who has professional experience with BK Häcken and Brøndby IF.

The Courage ended up with four first-round draft picks, thanks in part to that trade with the Dash. They selected Olivia Wingate (F, Notre Dame) at No. 6, Sydney Collins (DM, CA) at No. 8, Clara Robbins (M, Florida State) at No. 9 and Haley Hopkins (F, Virginia) at No. 9. 11. Notably, the last time a team had four first-round draft picks, the Western New York Flash selected Abby Dahlkemper, Lynn Williams, Sam Mewis and Jalen Hinkle (Daniels) in the 2015 draft — a big chunk of that team.
