Porro flew to London on Tuesday morning and the deal could be completed soon, with the wing-back subject to a medical at Tottenham. Due date.

“Tottenham were in talks with Sporting all day yesterday. My understanding is that when Spurs thought a deal had been agreed at the weekend, Sporting moved the goalposts on Sunday night.

“They have reviewed the fee structure and the fee that Marcus Edwards – the former Tottenham player at Sporting – would have if he left Sporting in the future.

“Porro flew to London at 3am this morning so hopefully he will be a Spurs player in the next few hours.

“I’m told he’s very excited to join this football club.

“I can also confirm that Matt Doherty is joining Atletico Madrid on loan – a direct loan until the end of the season, I understand, with no option or commitment. Doherty is going to LaLiga.”

Analysis: A major upgrade at a key position

Sky Sports’ Nick Wright:

Antonio Conte’s preferred 3-4-2-1 system requires effective wing-backs and while Ivan Perisic has strengthened his left flank, his right has been neglected. Till now.

Pedro Porro is set to join Spurs as one of the most exciting young players in Europe, scoring nine goals in 67 Premier League games and scoring 13 goals since joining from Girona in 2019.

He helped the Portuguese side win the league and cup in his first season at the club and that success has allowed him to test himself against Champions League opposition, including Spurs this season and Borussia Dortmund and Manchester City last term.

He accepted the challenge and proved his ability to possess at the highest level, but his attacking threat is key to his appeal to Conte and Spurs.

Pedro Porro is more productive in attack than Emerson Royal

So far this season, Emerson Royal and Matt Doherty have made just two goals and one assist in 28 Premier League appearances.

The Brazilian has been first choice for most of the campaign and a closer look at the numbers makes the contrast between his production and Porro’s even more stark.

Porro has created seven times more chances per 90 minutes than Emerson and his numbers for assists, crosses, shots and successful dribbles are even higher. He represents a significant upgrade for Spurs at a crucial position.

There is no option to buy, meaning the winger will return to Spurs in the summer, where he is under contract until 2026. The 21-year-old joined Tottenham from LaLiga club Tottenham for £21.6m in 2021, which also included Erik Lamela’s move to Sevilla as part of the deal. However, Gill played only 13 games for Tottenham, and was on loan at Valencia last season.

The move comes after new winger Arnaut Danjuma made his debut in Preston’s 3-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend.

Gil was dismayed by Danjuma’s arrival. He thought he had done enough to impress the managers over the past few weeks, scoring in a 4-0 win at Crystal Palace earlier this month.
