We’re reaching the business end of the World Cup group stage, with Groups A and B done and dusted. So far, France, Portugal, England, Senegal, the USA, the Netherlands and Brazil have qualified for the 1/8 finals. They will be joined by nine other teams in the final match of each group. Qatar also joined South Africa as the only countries not to make it out of the World Cup group stage. Let’s take a look at who could join the trio in the last 16 and what their journey will be to get there.
Looking at tiebreakers, the team with the most points advances, and the start is simple. If two teams have the same points, it goes to their total goal difference. If they are still tied, the team with the highest number of goals in the next place will be the promoted side. The rules will only be applied again if two tied teams play head-to-head. Thus, after the total points in those matches, there is a difference between head-to-head games and goals scored. If they go all the way and can’t be split, then it goes to a fair game system.

The team with the least number of penalty kicks in the matches will advance. Thus, a team loses one point for one yellow card, three points for each red card for a second yellow card, four points for a straight red card and five points for a straight red card after a yellow.

- Netherlands: Group winners.

Group B
- England: Group winners.
- United States: Second place.
- Iran: Deleted.
- Wales: Deleted.
Group C
- Poland: Defeat Argentina, win the group and can reach the 1/8 finals. They can also qualify for the Round of 16 with a draw, but Saudi Arabia can only win the group if they draw or lose against Mexico.
- Argentina: He can reach the 1/8 finals by defeating Poland. They can also advance to the round of 16 with a draw and Saudi Arabia drawing or losing to Mexico by less than three goals. Win and Saudi Arabia can top the group with a draw or loss.
- Saudi Arabia: Can beat Mexico and reach the 1/8 finals. They can also qualify with a draw and a loss against Argentina or a loss and Argentina losing by another goal. (ie if Saudi Arabia loses 1-0 and Argentina loses 2-0, Saudi Arabia advances
- Mexico: Defeat Argentina and defeat Poland to reach the 1/8 finals. Can also qualify by winning and Poland/Argentina on goal difference And Argentina will win or draw against Poland.
Group D
- France: Qualified for round of 16. The group can be won by a win or draw against Tunisia or a draw or loss against Australia.
- Australia: Defeats Denmark and can reach the 1/8 finals. Can also qualify with a draw and a draw or loss against Tunisia.
- Denmark: Defeat Australia and can reach the 1/8 finals.
- Tunisia: A win over France, Australia losing to Denmark, and Tunisia beating Denmark by a big margin can make it to the round of 16. Tunisia can also advance to the round of 16 with a win over France and a draw against Australia.
Group E
- Spain: Round of 16 with a win or draw against Japan. Can beat Japan and win the group. A loss to Japan and a draw between Costa Rica and Germany could also advance.
- Japan: Defeated Spain and reached the final 16. They can also reach the 1/8 finals by drawing with Spain and drawing with Costa Rica and Germany. A win over Spain and a win over Germany could top the group with a better goal difference than Costa Rica.
- Costa Rica: Can progress with a win over Germany, a loss against Spain/Japan or a draw between the two. A draw and a loss against Japan can progress. With a win in the group, Spain can close the six-goal gap between Japan and Japan.
- Germany: A win and a loss against either Spain or Japan could make it to the last 16. A win by more than one goal and Japan can advance even with a draw.
Group F
- Croatia: Defeats Belgium and can reach the 1/8 finals. Also possible is a draw against Belgium and a Morocco loss to Canada. Morocco can improve their results and win the group.
- Morocco: A win or a draw with Canada can make it to the 1/8 finals. Also, a Belgium win or loss, Belgium win and a better goal difference than Croatia can make it to the 1/8 finals. Croatia can improve their results and win the group by creating a one-goal difference.
- Belgium: Defeats Croatia and can reach the 1/8 finals. Can also advance with a draw against Morocco and a defeat by more than three goals.
- Canada: Knocked out for the 16th round.
Group G
- Brazil: In the round of 16, you can either win the group or draw against Cameroon or lose to Switzerland.
- Switzerland: A win or a draw against Serbia can make it to the last 16. A win in the group, a loss for Brazil, can create a three-goal gap.
- Cameroon: Beating Brazil and losing to Switzerland, they can reach the last 16. They can also beat Brazil by more than one goal and advance to the last 16 with a draw between Switzerland and Serbia.
- Serbia: Defeat Switzerland and lose Cameroon and can reach the last 16.
Group H
- Portugal: Until the last 16. In the group, you can either win or draw against South Korea or lose to Ghana.
- Ghana: A win or a draw against Uruguay will qualify for the last 16. With a draw, they should have a better goal difference than South Korea if they beat Portugal.
- South korea: A win over Portugal, a loss against Ghana or a draw against Uruguay can make it to the last 16.
- Uruguay: With a loss against Ghana, South Korea can advance to the last 16 with a loss or a draw against Portugal. If South Korea wins along with Uruguay, it will go into a tiebreaker.
