Auld Lang Syne: The history and lyrics of the traditional New Year’s tune

CNN

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, voices around the world will revive the centuries-old tradition of singing “Auld Lang Syne” to bid farewell to the passing year.

“Auld Lang Syne” – which translates as “old times” – was written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1788 and is thought to have originated from a Scottish folk song.

Despite efforts to belt out the song every New Year’s Eve, few people seem to know the words.

Don’t get caught pretending to say words on New Year’s Eve this year. Luckily for you, we’ve put together a script below so you can enjoy yourself and all your friends in the New Year.

Acquaintance should be forgotten,

And never brought to mind?

Acquaintance should be forgotten,

And auld lang syne.

CHORUS

To auld lang syne, my soul,

To auld lang syne.

We will take the cup of kindness yet,

To auld lang syne.

And surely you will be your pie-stowp!

And I will definitely be mine!

And we will take the cup of kindness yet,

To auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

We twa hae run about braes

And wear good gowans

But we have wander’d mony tired foot

Sin auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

We have paid, I burned

Leave the sun in the morning until I sleep.

But the seas between us roared

Sin auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

And there is a hand, my faithful fire!

And gie’s your hand!

And we will take the right leader who will seek,

To auld lang syne.

REPEAT CHORUS

Old friendships should be forgotten

And never brought to mind?

If old friends are forgotten,

And the past, the past.

REPEAT CHORUS

And a long, long time ago, my love

For a long time, long ago.

We will take a cup of kindness yet

For a long time, long ago.

And you will definitely buy your pint-jag!

And I will definitely buy mine!

And we will take a cup of kindness yet

For a long time, long ago.

REPEAT CHORUS

The two of us have run over the hills

And pull the daisies well;

But we have wandered the fur foot

From long, long ago.

REPEAT CHORUS

We two have paddled down the stream,

From morning sun to evening;

But the sea between us wide has roared

From long, long ago.

REPEAT CHORUS

And there is a hand, my faithful friend!

And give us your hand!

And we will take a deep draft of goodwill

For a long time, long ago.

REPEAT CHORUS
